Sweden

Sweden is an active market for patent litigation, though commentators note a recent decline in the number of life sciences cases. Nevertheless, it is home to a number of well-respected practitioners in the field. Proceedings often take place in parallel with other countries, calling for cross-border cooperation with attorneys in other Scandinavian jurisdictions.

One

Håkan Borgenhäll heads Advokatfirman Lindahl’s IP group in Stockholm; he is a “strong, impressive IP lawyer who leaves no stone unturned”. Advokatfirman Lindahl senior partner Ulf Dahlgren is identified as a “leading light: highly skilled and experienced”. He has been active in patent litigation for over three decades and is “undoubtedly one of Sweden’s best”. Joining Bird & Bird from boutique firm Gozzo are the “thorough and tenacious” Giovanni Gozzo and the “immensely revered” Örjan Grundén. They are seasoned veterans assuming senior counsel roles. They lend the firm gravitas, a wealth of experience and expertise, with less involvement in day-to-day work on patent cases than regular partners.

Two

Setterwalls’ pharmaceutical and life sciences group is led by partner Lennart Arvidson, who also performs transactional work in the sector. Arvidson’s generics work has won him renown on the circuit; he is described by peers as “a real thorn in the side of innovators”. Mannheimer Swartling partner Per Josefson’s work on multi-jurisdictional patent cases has attracted international praise; he is recognised as “a fine all-round IP practitioner”. Dag Sandart represents the second generation of the Sandart family at Sandart&Partners. He comes “equipped with great skills” and is highly recommended in his expertise in life sciences patent litigation and regulatory matters. Commentators talk of their “huge respect” for Peter Sande , also at Sandart&Partners. Peers view him as a “brilliant IP practitioner and a very difficult prospect in court”.

Three

The “extremely able” Jonas Gulliksson set up Advokatbyrån Gulliksson, which works on patent matters in conjunction with sister patent attorney firm Ström & Gulliksson. As well as being an attorney at law, Gulliksson is qualified as a European patent attorney; he is best known in the life sciences field for his medical devices work. Joining his former Gozzo partners at Bird & Bird, Ragnar Lundgren will be leading the charge in patent litigation at the firm in the coming years. Although more renowned for his mechanical patents work, Håkan Sjöström of Advokatfirman Glimstedt Straus & Partners is a “hugely impressive patent litigator offering a great service in any field”. Commentators praise the “innovative legal mind” of Advokatfirman Lindahl’s Jonas Westerberg; cooperating foreign counsel consider him a “joy to work with”.
