Finland

Most practitioners named in Finland represent clients in life sciences patent litigation as part of a broad patent and IP practice. However, action in the life sciences looks to be increasing and Finnish legislation offers less protection to innovators than they might expect in neighbouring jurisdictions. High-quality representation is thus a vital commodity in this market, particularly for innovators looking to extend rights to their patents. Where innovators are litigating, it follows that generics will require representation of an equal standard, creating conditions for a compact but valuable market.

His position as “the first choice” in the market is confirmed by the many foreign clients and referring law firms that seek him out.

He has a broad IP practice, and “has been active in pharmaceutical patent litigation for many years and benefits from a wealth of experience”. The up-and-coming Ella Mikkola heads up Bird & Bird’s Finnish IP and life sciences group, bringing her wide-ranging expertise and “superb litigation skills” to this recently opened office. HH Partners alumnus Hanna Paloheimo heads the life sciences team at Castrén & Snellman, having joined the firm as a partner in 2008. Unusually in the Finnish market, Paloheimo holds scientific and legal degrees, giving her “a certain advantage, value and ability to present a technically detailed case” that clients appreciate. Borenius & Kemppinen’s Ben Rapinoja is “skilful, thorough and highly regarded”.
