And so to Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden for the CIP Forum 2011. This is an event I always make sure I attend. It’s organised by the Centre for Intellectual Property, a joint venture between Gothenburg and Chalmers universities; and an organisation I have written about a number of times before. Its inter-disciplinary approach to the issue of IP and where it sits in the knowledge/innovation economy is ground-breaking and an example for other institutions across the world ...

Microsoft has reportedly earned $150 million in licensing fees from HTC since settling an Android-related patent dispute with the Taiwanese company last year. According to calculations published on the Asymco website that means Microsoft has earned five times more from this deal than it has from selling licences relating to Windows Phone: A rough estimate of the number of HTC Android devices shipped is 30 million. If HTC paid $5 per unit to Microsoft, that adds up to $150 ...

With the official launch of the International IP Strategists Association earlier this week, I was interested to get a report on the IP strategies of UK-based manufacturers commissioned by law firm DMH Stallard – not a name I have come across before. Plan, Protect and Prosper: How Manufacturers Leverage IP to Create Value and Safeguard their Futures is based on interviews with directors of major UK manufacturing businesses in industries such as consumer electronics, aerospace, ...

The Court of Appeal for the Federal Circuit in the US has issued an important judgment relating to inequitable conduct as a defence to patent infringement - and made it harder to do so in future. The decision was handed down yesterday. I have just received a comment on the findings from Randall Schwartz, an associate at law firm Hovey Williams: In an important outcome for patentees and patent infringement litigants, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ...

Here’s a little snippet for you. According to the monumental China: Effects of Intellectual Property Infringement and Indigenous Innovation Policies on the US Economy, published earlier this month by the International Trade Commission, a survey of US businesses done as part of the research process found the following: US firms that operate in China and had concerns about IPR infringement reported that an improvement in IPR protection and enforcement in China to levels ...

The International Intellectual Property Strategists Association (INTIPSA) has opened its door for business and is now inviting applications for membership. Formed by a group of UK-based individuals who had been identified as leading IP strategists in the first edition of the IAM Strategy 250, published in 2009, INTIPSA describes itself as “a professional association serving the community of intellectual property strategists worldwide”, whether these work within IP owning ...

We’ve had trolls, neo-trolls, NPEs and privateers; now meet China’s cockroaches. It’s not a term that I have come across before, but it describes an activity in China that a number of foreign companies will be familiar with. It’s all explained in one of the introductory chapters we will be publishing in the 2011 edition of the IAM Strategy 250, which comes out in June. In the chapter, which looks at the emerging IP transactions market place in Asia, Chris ...

It’s tough working as part of an in-house trademark team. What you do is often not fully understood by other parts of the company; you are a perennial target for cost-cutting; and, thanks to the internet, the range of problems you have to fire-fight grows larger every year – a process that is only bound to accelerate given the expansion of gTLDs that is about to take place. And it’s not as if what you do is peripheral. Instead, it is absolutely central to the success ...

It’s been a couple of days now since this blog broke the news that a full list of investors in several major funds run by Intellectual Ventures had been revealed in court documents relating to a declaratory judgment case being heard in the Northern District of California (PatentlyO also reported the news a little later on the same day). The last 48 hours have given everyone a little time to have a think through some of the implications. Over on GametimeIP site, for example, ...
