IP Australia bucks the trend and hires more examiners
Just before I went on holiday I wrote a piece for PatentlyO about patent application trends and their consequences in various parts of the world. I wrote that Australia was one country in which a downturn in applications had led to staff being laid off in the national patent office. Oblon Spivak is top of the tree when it comes to securing US patents
A list produced by patent information resource Patent Buddy reveals that Oblon Spivak McClelland Maier & Neustadt secures more US patents for its clients - or at least those among the leading 300 recipients - than any other American law firm. In 2008, the Arlington, Virginia, based firm achieved 2,853 grants for companies in the top 300, that's over 700 more than second-placed Sughrue Mion. ICAP Ocean Tomo abandons November auction and promises changes for 2010
The ICAP/Ocean Tomo open IP auction planned for Paris at the beginning of November has been cancelled, according to a report posted on the website of Inventors Digest magazine. The news follows the dismal results achieved in the first auction the company held, which took place in Chicago last month, and the hugely disappointing returns from the final auction that Ocean Tomo organised prior to selling its transactions business to ICAP in June. It's holiday time ...
This year, we were promised what the weather forecasters called a barbeque summer in the UK. Applications on the slide at the EPO
A little snippet for you. I have just heard from Ciaran McGinley, the Controller of the European Patent Office, that the number of applications it has received so far this year is down 8%. By way of contrast, for the six months to March 2009, applications to the JPO were down 6%; while in March PatentlyO projected a 10% decline in first filings at the USPTO. Internationally, PCT filings are down by 5%. Ouch!

Despite major change in Asia, the US is still number one and will be for a while yet

Koreans plan NPE to reduce the country's huge patent licensing deficit
The Korean Intellectual Property Office has announced plans to tackle the country's patent deficit that in 2007 saw local companies pay out close to $3 billion more in licensing fees than they received in return.
